John Steel - A Pretty Girl is Like a Melody (1919)
Charted at #1 in 1919. From the "Ziegfeld Follies of 1919". A timeless song, written by Irving Berlin. Another version of this song by Sam Ash charted at #7. John was a tenor with a great voice. He had many hits between 1919 and 1924. Irving said that he wrote this song with John Steel in mind. Years after his popularity faded, Steel became a singing instructor. The original production number featuring this song in the Ziegfeld Follies incorporated Steel and five beautiful ladies in a format much used in later revues for decades afterwards. The unforgettable lavish performance of the song in the '30's movie, "The Great Ziegfeld", was one of the largest productions ever put into an MGM musical and never fails to move me whenever I see it.Released in September 1919. Recorded on June 30, 1919. B-side is "Tulip Time".
